Florida to Maine to Florida By Scooter

Over a three week period in June we rode a pair of Kymco 250cc scooters from Florida to Maine and back. We conceived the ride to promote transportation via scooter.

Following a primarily coastal route and using no support vehicles the riders carried all their necessary gear on the scooters. Overnights were a combination of camping and hosteling and motels.

The pace was not as relaxed as planned due to summer vacation traffic and dodging bad weather. Still it was great fun with incredible views and fantastic riding. We also managed a side trip to the
Micro Car Museum and had a great time.

Part 1 of the Scoot Comute was published in the Summer issue (#12) and Part 2 was published in the Fall issue (#13) of Scooter Rider Magazine.

(note these are large photos and may take a while to load on a dial-up connection.)

The route included overnight stops at  these towns:
  • Northbound
  • Oak Hill, FL
  • Savannah, GA
  • Madison, GA
  • Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Kitty Hawk, NC
  • Lewes, DE
  • Quakerstown, PA
  • Middletown, CT
  • Portland, ME
  • Southbound
  • Middletown, CT
  • Lewes, DE
  • Kitty Hawk, NC
  • Beaufort, SC
  • Oak Hill, FL
  • Naples, FL

WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO

Why promote scooter travel? Somehow our society has come to embrace large, expensive, and less fuel efficient vehicles. Even motorcycles have become less practical as they get more outrageous with huge engines. Consequently, scooters have become one of the last motor vehicles that is still easily affordable to purchase and supply with fuel.

Scooters are a practical, fun and efficient and Scooter Rider Magazine wants to encourage their use. By our riding this great distance we hope to inspire commuters and travelers to consider a more fun mode of transport, the scooter way.

PRODUCTS CHOSEN
FOR THE SCOOT COMMUTE

We would like to sincerely thank the companies that took interest in aiding us in promoting travel by scooter. These companies have supplied us with their excellent products and services to assist our trip in many ways.

We did not just call everyone and look for freebies. High quality products that would do the job on the long run were our goal and thus our list of companies with top products was very short.

All products excelled during our trip and these products and services have the Scooter Rider Magazine stamp of approval so please check out their websites and offerings.

SCOOTERS
KYMCO USA makes some of the highest quality scooters, motorcycles, and atvs available. We were very pleased to have the peace of mind from riding their  People 250 and Grand Vista 250.

Our local dealer for KYMCO is GRANDPA'S CYCLE in Ft Myers Florida. Grampa and his staff came highly recommended to us and they have gone well beyond the call in receiving and setting up the scooters for the trip. We highly encourage you contact Grampa's for all your scooter needs. Or stop by when in SW Florida.

CLOTHING

DRAGGIN' JEANS legendary Kevlar mesh T-shirts and Kevlar/Denim Jeans were worn as they allowed us the protection of custom riding garments but still still looked like normal street clothing.

Unpredictable weather along the northeast coast makes rain gear a big necessity. We called the pros at Cosmopolitan Motors and they supplied us with their well made HELD rainwear from Europe .

ZUB Tubular Headwear is very versatile and can be used in many ways for scooter riders. We used both the standard and (for the cold N.E. mornings) fleece models on a daily basis.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT
HYPER LITES increase rear visibility of a scooter incredibly lessening the chance of getting rear-ended. These auxiliary LEDs are bright taillights that flash intensely when the brakes are applied. They aided greatly in our safety.

Few things can discourage a driver from pulling out in front of a scooter more than a Headlight Modulator/Pulsator. KISAN makes excellent compact units that work on most scooters and have "plug & play" installation. Both scooters were ourfitted with these fine units.

GEAR
We are constant users of courier/messenger bags both on and off the scooters. These versatile bags get used for everything and we used our favorite brand, COURIERWARE.

Y
ou gotta have a place for all that stuff and Cosmopolitan Motors once again stepped up and supplied us with SHAD tail trunks they import from Spain. They mounted easily, kept stuff dry and looked great.

COMFORT
Three weeks on the road can take it's toll on the most resilient of derrieres. Knowing this we also knew who to call. The Roho Group supplied each rider with their legendary AIRHAWK air adjustable seat pads that make the days seem much shorter.

Also aiding us to maintain comfort on those long days on the road was ANTI MONKEY BUTT POWDER. A favorite of truck drivers this specially formulated powder does exactly what it says by avoiding that clammy feeling.
